College Cross Country - Washington women win the Pac 10 title, Set Record With first Perfect Score

It was time to show on Halloween in Springfield (OR) Country Club for the 2008 Pac-10 Conference Cross Country Championships and the University of Washington Huskies showed why the runners are the No. 1 team in the country charts and won with an unprecedented perfect score of 15.

Freshman Kendra Schaaf broke the course record by 33 seconds and was sophomore Mel Lawrence, freshman Christine Babcock, senior Anita Campbell, junior and senior Katie Follett followedAmada Miller. The perfect finishing 1-2-3-4-5 for 15 points had never performed in women or men Pac 10 championships already.

Schaaf, a Canadian of Regina, Saskatchewan, who led from start to finish, ran a blistering 19.34 on the clock path 6000 meters (3.72 miles) to the record level of 19.57 time clock.

Four of Washington's Top-5 finisher Mel Lawrence (19.53 clock), Christine Babcock (19:54) and Anita Campbell (19:57), all beat or tied the old record. Katie Follett was eight seconds later with20:05. Washington team 1:39:12.24 total time for an average time of 19:50 for each of the first five in the Huskies' request.

Amanda Miller strong sixth space does not end once as only the top five figure count in the standings. Sophomore Lauren Saylor finished 12th. Schaaf was in Washington, the winner of the first single from Regina Joyce in 1982.

All seven runners earned All-Pac 10 honors for its unprecedented size, the first six Huskies have their second Pac 10Title in school history, the first coming into 1989. In the women's team competition, Oregon was awarded the second place (55 points), third Stanford (99), Arizona State fourth (105) and fifth State of Washington (188).

The score of the previous record low in the history of the Pac 10 Championship was 19, the 2002 men's team at Stanford and 22 women from 2006 Stanford team. Both teams went on to win NCAA championships. The victory snapped Washington women Stanford band of 12 straight championships.

ManyOregon experts thought an advantage in the can just because they went to their homeland, Oregon and men prevail in its competition, was an easy winner in the team championship with 28 points. Stanford was runner-up 47 and California and Washington by 169 for the third band.

Oregon was led by record during senior Galen Rupp clocking 22:55 for 8,000 meters (4.96 miles). It 'was the first race of the season for Rupp, a competitor for the 2008 Olympics in the U.S.over 10,000 meters.

Washington's top runner in the contest was Jeremy Mineau 10 Square. The 3rd Place Men in Washington was their best result since 2003. The Huskies are coached by Greg Metcalf.

Up next for Husky racers will be at 15, the NCAA West Regional Championships in November at Stanford University, then the NCAA National Championships, Nov. 24 at Indiana State University.
